Our Version of Colossus

Unlike the bold giant of Greek fame
With strong limbs that stretch from land to land
Here we will stand at our sea-washed, sunset gates.
The Statue of Liberty with torch, whose flame
is the captured lightning and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her bright hand
that glows world-wide welcome; her serene eyes command
The open harbor that the twin cities surround.
"Keep ancient ideals, your fancy culture!" She cries
With silent lips, "Give me your hardships, your excuses"
Your huddled masses that want to breathe free.
The horrible refuse of your shore
Send these, the homeless, hardships to me
I lift my light to show the open door.
