Colossus Modern Poem

This poem was created by: Jessica Rodriguez and Michelle LaBine

Not like the bold statue of Greek fame,
With arms outstretched to welcome in,
Here at our wide-open gates we wait,
A strong person with a flaming torch,
That can be seen by all and its name,
The Keeper of Immigrants. From its torch,
People see a promise land, its eyes,
watch over those coming in,
"Keep your civilized people in their land" it cries,
"Give me your tired, your poor,
and those burdened and waiting to be free,
The garbage from your land can be,
Sent here for a better life.
It lifts its torch to welcome everyone in.
